and by the way the new lates album
called "all hope is gone"
On All Hope Is Gone masked freaks Slipknot overcome the gimmicky gonzo metal tag to become a credible music force - and, miraculously, almost socially respectable.
Slipknot's maggots - the name given to the band's rabid fans - will disagree, but on past albums the Iowa-based nine-piece have tended towards the obnoxious, whereas All Hope Is Gone reveals a sense of maturity.
This time round they've done away with the shock and concentrated on the rock. So, for example, there's not an inane song name in sight, unlike previous titles like People = Shit (a great, yet ultimately brainless song from 2001's Iowa).
However, never fear maggots, because while the ferocity is not quite at the level reached on their classic 1999 self-titled album, which included the seething Spit It Out, All Hope Is Gone is still an unrelenting mix of melodic power versus percussive mayhem. This equation, which Slipknot have built their reputation on, is summed up perfectly by the bludgeoning chug of first single Psychosocial which has a devilishly catchy chorus offset by an onslaught of destructive guitars and Corey Taylor's raging vocals in the verse.
Then there's Vendetta, whose frantic and scything riffs are a rip-off of Mastodon's Crystal Skull - which at least shows the Slipknot lads have good taste; Gematria (The Killing Name), Sulfur, and the manic This Cold Black are unbridled power anthems reminiscent of the band's debauched debut; and tender moments like Dead Memories and soppy, semi-acoustic track Snuff which, despite the name, is a candidate for rock ballad of the year, make the album more palatable.
But really, harden up, because you don't listen to Slipknot to be touched. You listen to the Iowans' chaotic and hammering metal to feel the power pulse and writhe through your body. And maggots rejoice, because All Hope Is Gone topped the album charts this week and here's hoping for many more weeks to come.
